Do criminal convictions affect car insurance?

In general, car insurance providers assess the risk profile of a driver based on various factors, including driving history, age, location, and vehicle type, among others.

One of the key elements in this assessment is the driver's record of legal compliance and behavior on the road.

A criminal conviction, particularly one related to driving or traffic offenses, can signal to insurers that the driver poses a higher risk of causing accidents or engaging in irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. When evaluating a potential policyholder, insurers may consider criminal convictions in several ways.

For instance, they may refuse coverage outright for individuals with certain types of convictions, such as Drunk Driving or reckless driving charges.

Alternatively, you may be offered coverage but at significantly higher premium rates due to the increased risk associated with the driver's history.

Additionally, some insurers may impose specific restrictions or limitations on coverage for drivers with criminal convictions.

Each car insurance provider has its own set of guidelines and underwriting criteria when it comes to evaluating potential policyholders with criminal convictions.

Therefore, the extent to which a conviction affects an individual's car insurance options will vary depending on the provider and the nature of the offense.

What do I do if I've been refused cover?

Being refused cover can be a frustrating and disheartening experience.

First and foremost, try to understand the reasons behind the refusal by reaching out to the insurance company for clarification. Once you have a clear understanding of the reasons, consider addressing these factors and reapplying for coverage.

You may also explore alternative insurance providers who may be more willing to provide coverage despite certain risk factors like us here at Insurance Factory.

Driving Conviction Codes

Driving Conviction Codes used to maintain road safety by categorising offenses, regulating penalties, and promoting responsible driving behaviour.

We've listed just a select few driving conviction codes that are being used in the UK today. For more information and to find a full list of all used driving conviction codes, visit the UK

Government's website by clicking on this link.

  • DD10: This conviction code refers to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. For example, if a driver loses control of their vehicle and hits a pedestrian, causing significant harm, they may be charged with DD10. A driver with a DD10 conviction may have caused a serious injury to a cyclist by attempting a risky overtaking maneuver.
  • DD40: Dangerous driving is represented by the DD40 code. This can include excessive speeding, aggressive maneuvers, or driving under the influence, which puts other road users at risk.  A driver tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds would be an example of someone with a DD40 conviction.
  • DD60: Manslaughter or culpable homicide while driving a vehicle is denoted by the DD60 code. This conviction occurs when a driver's actions result in the death of another person, either intentionally or due to negligence.  A driver with a DD60 conviction might have caused a fatal accident after driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • DD80: This code, DD80, stands for causing death by dangerous driving. It is applied when a driver's dangerous actions, such as reckless driving or speeding, lead to a fatal accident. A DD80 conviction might be given to a driver who caused a death due to excessive speeding in a residential area.
  • DD90: The DD90 conviction code is given for furious driving. This code applies when a driver displays extreme anger or aggression while driving, leading to potential harm to others on the road. A person engaging in a high-speed road rage incident could be charged with a DD90 conviction.

What convictions do I need to disclose?

In the United Kingdom, it is essential for drivers to be aware of their legal obligations when it comes to disclosing driving convictions.

Failure to disclose relevant driving convictions can result in severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or disqualification from driving.

Driving convictions are categorised into two types: endorsable and non-endorsable offences.

  • Endorsable offences are those that result in penalty points being added to your driving license, such as speeding, careless driving, or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Non-endorsable offences are less serious and do not result in penalty points, such as parking violations or minor traffic offences. For insurance purposes, you are typically required to disclose any unspent driving convictions that have occurred within the past five years.

This information allows insurance companies to accurately assess your risk level and determine appropriate premiums.

Make sure to stay informed about your obligations as a driver and always disclose any unspent convictions when required.
